This growing season has been a little unexpected to say the least. With the cold, wet spring – not to mention the incredibly late frost and April snow – our berries are a little behind this year.
Our cherries are usually ripe by the first week in July – we’re always picking by our Favourite Farm Girl’s birthday on July 5 and this was the first year ever we were not. With some heat in the forecast, we hope to start picking the earlier variety by the end of next week.
In another unusual turn of events, our black currants look like the first berries we’ll be picking this year – aside from Andrew’s strawberries which are fantastic and available on his stand on Tomlinson Road. If all goes according to plan – which it has not this year – we hope to start machine picking our main black currant field this weekend.
Hopefully, our other berries will be right behind them. For more updates right from the fields, check out our Instagram page (Silver Rill Berry) or click on the three little dots in the upper menu.
You can also find updates on Andrew’s strawberries, garlic and other goodies on his Instagram page, Andrew’s Farm Stand.
We hope to see you soon, you can find us Saturdays at the Peninsula Country Market, 9-1 at the Saanich Fairgrounds, or if we have fresh cherries on the stand during the week, our cherry signs will be out around the neighbourhood. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to give us a call at 250-652-5227, we’ll happily take an order and set something aside for you.
See you soon!
